We L-O-V-E hearing from couples who we’ve featured in the past to see how they are and what they have been up to since their Outer Banks Wedding! So when Catie reached out to us earlier this month, we thought it would be a great idea to catch-up and have her & her wife Kayte reflect on their experience getting married on the Outer Banks with their THREE year anniversary coming up later this Summer.
Why did you choose the Outer Banks?
We chose the outer banks because we wanted a beach wedding that was drivable for our family and friends. We fell in love with the Pine Island Lodge and that venue is really what drew us to the OBX!
How did you go about planning a destination wedding from NY?
Lots of emails! The first thing we did was hire a coordinator. Mandy was amazing in helping us choose the rest of our vendors and gave us good local insight into our wedding planning decisions.
Did you attend any of the local wedding shows?
We did not but we made several trips down while planning the wedding and our vendors were so helpful.
How did you find your vendors?
Using the OBXWA website and Mandy Harlow’s recommendations!
How are you two doing now with your three year anniversary coming up later this summer?
Doing great! We are proud dog moms to Josie and are expecting a baby at the end of August. Catie is 7 months pregnant! We have a babymoon trip to OBX coming up at the end of June!
Looking back, is there anything you are glad you did? Anything you would have done differently?
Our wedding was a week long event. Our friends and family stayed with us at the Pine Island Lodge and in the surrounding area. The memories we created that week, with the people we care about, are ones we will never forget. We are certainly glad we did a destination wedding and followed our gut with using an event home. There is honestly nothing we would have done differently!
What was wedding planning like as a same-sex couple? Did you find the Outer Banks to be accommodating?
When researching photographers, we saw pictures from a same sex couple’s wedding that Ginger Harvey took. The pictures were so beautiful and we immediately felt like the OBX would be able to accomodate us. We felt extremely comfortable with all of our vendors and planning a wedding in OBX was better than we could have ever expected.
Do you have any advice for other LGBTQ+ couples who are thinking of an Outer Banks Wedding?
Nothing other than DO IT, it is going to be the best 🙂 All of the vendors we worked with are tolerant, accepting and happy to work with same sex couples!
Fun fact: we had these giant LOVE letters that Kayte’s brother made for us. We sold them to Renee Landry after our wedding and we have seen them in a lot of your photos from other weddings. It makes us so happy to see them being used at so many weddings!
